Major assignments included Operations Officer and Chief Instructor Pilot for a Readiness Training Squadron and Squadron Commander deployed in the USS Constellation. In addition to numerous military awards including a Meritorious Unit Citation for His squadron, Captain Smith received a special Seventh Fleet Citation for achieving the highest readiness and highest carrier landing scores in Carrier Airwing Nine (deployed in the USS Constellation) during the course of it’s deployment.
